Jan Rath was on sabbatical leave from April till September, 2012. He spent the first three months at the Netherlands’ Institute in Turkey (Istanbul).
On May 31, 2012, 14:00-18:00, he and Volkan Aytar organized an International Seminar: Whose Heritage? Preservation and Destruction of the Cultural Heritage of Historic Neighborhoods— A Comparison of Global Cities.
Jan Rath accepted the invitation from Prof. Helga Nowotny, President of the European Research Council (ERC), to act as a Panel Member for the Panel SH3-Environment, Space and Population in the ERC Starting Grant and ERC Advanced Grant Evaluations.
On April 1, 2011, Jan Rath stepped down as the Academic Director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (IMES). He will continue to be associated with the Institute, amongst others as a member of the IMES Program Board. Since April 1, 2010, Jan Rath has been the Head of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology of the university of Amsterdam.
In March 2009, Jan Rath was elected to European ISC Co-Chair of the International Metropolis Project. The International Metropolis Project is a forum that bridges research, policy and practice on migration and diversity. The project aims to enhance academic research capacity, encourage policy-relevant research on migration and diversity issues, and facilitate the use of that research by governments and non-government organizations. The Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (Directorate General for Housing, Communities and Integration) supports the secretariat for the European Co-Chair position.
