Head of Department of Sociology — UvA

Head of Department of Sociology — UvA

Jan Rath has been appointed Chair of the Department of Sociology in the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Amsterdam.

The appointment brings him back to university management. Previously, he served as the Chair of the (combined) Department of Sociology and Anthropology (2010-2015) and earlier as the Director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies (2005-2011).

Sociology at the UvA focuses on the spatial and socio-economic mobility of the urban population, the rise and fall of urban lifestyles and cultures, the ever-changing social relations between individuals and groups, old and new forms of discrimination, inequality, and citizenship, as well as the policy dimensions. The central mission of its program is to produce high-quality, theory-driven empirical research on a wide range of institutional fields, employing a variety of research methods. While the research primarily addresses (international) academic audiences, much of its research engages with governments, societal stakeholders and wider publics in the Netherlands and beyond. UvA’s sociology is ranked 14th in the QS World University Rankings, and 1st in continental Europe.

The chairmanship will be effective as of August 1, 2018. The new chair can be reached by e-mail at chair-soc-fmg@uva.nl
